Philippines' Anti-Money Laundering Council may freeze assets of Congressman designated as terrorist

The Department of Justice in the Philippines has indicated that the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) could freeze the assets of suspended Congressman Arnolfo Teves Jr. if he is designated as a terrorist by the Anti-Terrorism Council (ATC). Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla stated that the ATC could initiate proceedings to determine whether Teves should be officially labeled as a terrorist, once murder charges are filed against him for the killing of Negros Oriental governor Roel Degamo and others on 4 March. Remulla highlighted that the Anti-Terrorism Act is being used as an “ally in our pursuit of justice” and not as a tool of oppression. He also urged Teves to return to the country and answer questions.

Remulla further highlighted that the Anti-Terrorism Act is being used as an “ally in our pursuit of justice” and not as a tool of oppression.

Remulla encouraged Teves to go back to the nation and respond to inquiries. But Teves, who was in the US on medical leave when the Dagamo murder occurred, has been suspended by the House of Representatives for disregarding orders to get back home. Teves recently expressed amusement at the government's decision to designate him a terrorist in order to make him come home during a virtual press conference.

Meanwhile, Interior and Local Government Secretary Benhur Abalos has assured Teves of "100 percent safety" if he finally decides to show up and face the charges against him. Abalos also heads the Special Task Force Degamo, which is currently investigating the case and is expected to complete its investigation soon.

The leader of the Special Task Force Degamo, Abalos, also stated that they anticipate wrapping up their probe very soon.
