Pagasa: Low Pressure Area Detected East of Mindanao

As to the state weather agency (PAG_ASA) on Friday, a low-pressure area (LPA) has been identified in the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) east of Mindanao; however, there is still a slim chance of it intensifying into a tropical cyclone.

At 4 p.m. 900 kilometers east of southern Mindanao, the LPA is not expected to surge during the next 24 hours, according to an update from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

Pagasa did not, however, rule out the chance that, although still inside PAR, the LPA may strengthen into a tropical cyclone.

Based on wind speed, Pagasa divides tropical cyclones into five categories: a super typhoon is the strongest category, with winds of at least 185 km/h, and a tropical depression is the lowest, with maximum winds of 62 km/h.

Typhoon Carina (international name: Gaemi), which made landfall in China on Wednesday afternoon and intensified to super typhoon status, is predicted to weaken over the next few days, the agency said.

Authorities in Metro Manila and other areas of Luzon have declared a state of calamity due to flooding brought on by Typhoon Carina.

In the meantime, according to Pagasa, the Ilocos region, the Cordilleras, and the Babuyan Islands will continue to see sporadic rainfall brought on by the southwest monsoon, or habagat, over the provinces of Batanes, Zambales, Tarlac, Pampanga, and Bataan.

The coastal waters of Batanes, Cagayan's northern coast, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, and Pangasinan are under a gale warning.

The weather bureau stated, "We are reminding fishermen that sailing in these areas is still dangerous."
