Alice Guo's evasive responses resemble traits of a 'trained spy'
MANILA, Philippines — Former Bamban Mayor Alice Guo's evasive comments during Monday's Senate hearing resemble those of a "trained and smart foreign spy," according to former Senator Panfilo Lacson.
Guo appeared before the Senate for the first time since her arrest last week, as part of an investigation into her alleged role in a Philippine Offshore Gaming Operator (POGO) center in Bamban, Tarlac.
Guo was once again charged with contempt for giving "false and evasive" testimony about her genuine identity.
"The way Guo Hua Ping, a.k.a. Alice Guo, misled the senators during the hearing suggests she could be a trained foreign spy who had begun to infiltrate the country's political system by becoming an elected municipal mayor," Lacson told reporters.
Lacson also speculated on the possible implications if the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC) had yet to discover Guo's suspected activities.
"In a different scenario, she could have progressed to become a member of Congress, gaining access to highly sensitive information with national security implications," according to him. "Had the PAOCC not exposed her, it's conceivable that she and her handlers, through money or influence, might have even secured her an appointment as Secretary of National Defense or National Security Adviser."
Guo has refuted the allegations, claiming that she is a Filipino citizen, not a foreign spy.
Indonesian authorities captured Guo in Jakarta on September 4. She was returned to the Philippines on September 6.
