The comments were in response to those made by Moussa Faki Mahamat, the head of the African Union Commission, during the Russia-Africa meeting that took place in St. Petersburg. Mahamat pointed out the African Union's dedication to protecting states' integrity and sovereignty while pushing for peaceful conflict resolutions based on shared concessions.
The position of Kyiv on the issue is unambiguous; it declares that it is unwilling to engage in talks with Moscow as long as Russia has control over an important portion of Ukrainian land. The complete invasion, which took place 17 months ago, is still a sensitive subject that has prevented any progress in the negotiations.
On the other side, Russia has consistently argued that any upcoming negotiations must take into account the "new realities" brought about by the geographical adjustments carried about by the invasion.
Finding common ground through communication appears to be a difficult challenge as tensions between Russia and Ukraine continue. The international community is intently watching the situation for any possible developments as both parties maintain their positions.
