According to Hammad, Storm Daniel caused devastating flooding that had disastrous effects. Entire communities perished in the unrelenting flooding. In Libya's port city of Derna, which is in the country's east, the scale of the destruction was very terrible. Due to the failure of two important dams and the consequent submersion of significant portions of the city, Derna was formally designated a catastrophe zone in the aftermath of the tragedy. Communication lines were cut off, and the electricity system was damaged, leaving the impacted areas in the dark and alone.
The damage caused by the Mediterranean storm Daniel serves as an alarming indicator of the vulnerability that populations in the path of such natural disasters endure. Concerns regarding disaster planning and response are raised as Libya deals with the fallout from this catastrophe and attempts are being made to offer assistance and support to those who are in need.
