Manila, October 11, 2023 – President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has officially declared a special non-working day in the Philippines to facilitate citizen participation in the upcoming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections on October 30, 2023, according to a Malacaang announcement on Wednesday.

Proclamation 359, signed on October 9, designates Monday, October 30, as a special non-working day throughout the country. The move is being taken to ensure that all eligible Filipino voters have the opportunity to exercise their right to vote during the next elections.

President Marcos emphasized the need to allow the people to fully participate in this electoral process, highlighting the value of this democratic exercise.

The Supreme Court already authorized the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to hold the scheduled barangay and SK elections on October 30, 2023, as required by Republic Act 11935. This decision reaffirms the Philippines' commitment to upholding the democratic processes and ideals that serve as the foundation of its governance.
