According to a South Korean media program, North Korea executed 20 to 30 officials for failing to avert damage caused by severe flooding in late July.

Heavy rains caused floods in northeastern North Korea, which has been reported to have killed up to 1,500 people. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un initially praised the military's efforts to save lives but later criticized the government's lack of readiness for natural disasters. Following this, he removed the governor of the afflicted province and the minister of social affairs.

The executed government officials were held not only responsible for the calamity but also accused of corruption and incompetence. According to South Korean television station TV Chosun, these murders were carried out to prevent a potential civil crisis.
